The Actor in You Series
K-9th grade

Minimum class size: 8 students
Maximum class size: 20 students

March 15 - May 31 2008
(classes will not meet on May 3 or 17)
Every Semester, “The Actor in You Series” explores a  world from children’s award winning and popular literature or entertainment.

In Spring of 2008, join your friends and Dare to Dream as we learn acting and public speaking skills while exploring the Halls of High School. Go Wildcats!



LEVEL 1: (K-1 grade) -- An introduction to imagination and creative dramatics. This level encourages creative play and introduces value-based learning. Level One students will enter drama through story and improv.

LEVEL 2:
(2-3 grade) -- Studies the bare basics of stage and acting, focusing more on breaking the "shy" barrier. This level introduces storytelling, discovery and using one's imagination.


***    ***    ***    ***    *** LEVEL 3: (4-5 grade) -- Students embark on an adventure through literature and public speaking. Explore basic theatre skills by researching, writing, and presenting speeches and scenes.
 
***    ***    ***    ***    *** LEVEL 4: (6-9 grade) -- As advanced students of the art, emphasis is placed on technique. This level defines the basic skills of acting at a more mature level. Setting and achieving goals, exploring morals and working on one's ability to think critically are emphasized. Students are exposed to short scenes and fundamental stage skills are introduced. Professional acting techniques will be explored.


CHEERLEADING (dance) Cari Jaeger (choreographer from Cinderella) will come in and teach dance at each of the levels. We are looking at HSM dances for this date.
 
HISTORY (ticket to 'Arthur the Boy who would be King) Each student will receive one free ticket to Arthur the Boy who would be king They will each be asked to 'be the critic' and evaluate the production based on the things they have learned to that point. (level one will draw a picture of something they remember; level 2 will draw a picture and point out some props, costumes, set peices, lighting effects, sound, makeup, and characters they remember as well as a favorite part in the play; Level 3 will fill out the eval form and write a speech/presentation to give the week after the play; level 4 will do an indepth eval, speech/presentation, and written report on an aspect of Arthurian Legend. The speech is due the week after, the report by the end of the session)
 
MUSIC Sandie Palmer and/or Jasmine Palmer will teach musical theatre singing techniques to the kids at their levels in May (Level one will learn choral singing. level 2 will learn choral singing and expression, level 3 will learn musical theatre techniques applying 'monologue acting techniques' to a selected song for each student, level 4 will do the same as 3 but will be required to memorize their song and prepare it for performance with props costumes....etc.)
 
TEAM with this fast paced and energetic session, students will compete with their classmates in an 'Improv Relay' combining skills they have learned to this point. Vaired by level.
 
DECATHALON Similar to TEAM, the Decathalon will challenge the students to complete 10 tasks before the end of the session. These tasks will all tie directly into the standards set forth for each level by the National Stadards for Arts Education (NSAE) in Theatre and the Wisconsin Department of Pulic Instruction (DPI). Task #1 will be given the the students in levels 3 & 4 before the leave class the week before the Decathalon. When they have completed that task, they e-mail the proper response to me, another task will be e-mailed to them. Tasks include research, writing short dialogue based on research, evaluating a Television program, recognizing the aspects of a real li
fe encounter in daily life, etc. Levels 1 & 2 will complete their decathalon during their scheduled session. 
All levels welcome new and old students alike, meeting each child on their level while encouraging growth and learning. Each age group will concentrate on the same skill set, but the activities and exercises will vary by level..

Individuality is encouraged and all levels of experience are welcome. Empathy, sensitivity and concern for others are heavily emphasized throughout the series.

The session is running on Sat. afternoons at Dare to Dream Theater, 634 N. 10th St. (corner of 10th and St. Clair) in Manitowoc.

Level 1 & 2: ... Tuesdays 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Level 1 & 2: ... Saturdays 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm (tentativly scheduled based on enrollment)
Level 3: ... Thursdays 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Level 4: ... Saturdays 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
(tentativly scheduled based on enrollment)
Level 5: ... 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm (tentativly scheduled based on enrollment)

Cost is $100 or $10/week. Register in advance.
